Captain Phasma appears to have an integral role in the new "Star Wars" trilogy, as the armored soldier is set to appear in Rian Johnson's "Star Wars: Episode VIII."
In her interview with the Los Angeles Times, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said that Captain Phasma was an important character and a baddie in the best sense of the word. Kennedy's statement suggests that she had big plans for the character, who will carry on into the next "Star Wars" film.
Gwendoline Christie plays Captain Phasma in J.J. Abrams' upcoming "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens." Christie recalled that Kennedy had asked her if she had ever googled female heroines. The "The Zero Theorem" actress said that she had not, so Kennedy had done it for her.
According to Christie, there were a lot of scantily clad women and they should be allowed to dress exactly however they chose. For the actress, the idea of googling female heroines and seeing a lack of diversity in the examples that come up was a bit depressing.
Phasma's existence in the new trilogy appears to be a "no-brainer," according to Comic Book Resources. However, while previous installments introduced villains quickly before being killed off, things may be different for the Stormtroopers' commander.
Set 30 years after the events in the "Return of Jedi," Abram's "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens" stars an ensemble of both old and new heroes and villains played by Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Max von Sydow, Simon Pegg, Gwendoline Christie, Domhnall Gleeson, Oscar Isaac, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill, among others.
Abrams' "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens" is slated to premiere in theaters on Dec. 18 while Johnson's "Star Wars: Episode VIII" hits theaters on May 26, 2017.
