The movie "The Taking of Tiger Mountain in 3D" by Tsui Hark earned a total of $109.94 million in its first week since it was shown in theaters.
The movie featured Lin Gengxin, Zhang Hanyu, Tony Leung and Du Yiheng. The plot of the movie told the story of a conflict between a squad from the People's Liberation Army (PLA) and a gang from northeast China back in the days of the Chinese revolution.
The film was based on the Peking opera "Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy." It was one of the eight stage plays that were allowed to run in Chinese theaters during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), a decade of battling political ideologies.
The said Peking opera was then based on a novel by Qu Bo written sometime in 1957, and the musical score was made using the adaptation by the esteemed musician Brian Eno.
Meanwhile, the romance-comedy movie "Love on the Cloud" by Gu Changwei grossed a total of $42.18 million in the box office in 12 days. It was showed 165,391 times to 3.52 million viewers.
Jiang Wen's animated 3D "One Hundred Thousand Bad Jokes" raked $13.31 million in five days. And yet another Jiang Wen 3D, "Gone with the Bullets," earned $81.3 million after 18 days in cinema.
The movie "Night at the Museum" by Hollywood comedian Ben Stiller took the fifth place in the ranking of China's box office hits, making a total of $4.6 million on its first showing day.
