A baby girl that was just newborn for 24 to 36 hours was buried alive by her mother on Nov. 27 near a southern California bike path. Fortunately for the newborn infant, two sisters who were walking on the bike path near a riverbed in Compton heard the baby's cry.

The called 911 and Deputies Adam Collette and David Perry from the Compton Station were dispatched to the area where they found the baby on West 136th Street and North Slater Avenue. Sheriff Jim McDonnell said, "They hear what sounded like an animal making a noise, or a baby's cry. It was muffled."

They reported the incident to authorities. Associated Press reports that two deputies found the newborn wrapped in what looks like a hospital blanket and was buried in a two-foot-wide hole under loose soil and a piece of asphalt. The baby's face was covered with loose dirt.

The baby girl was taken to a hospital and is now in stable condition. On Sunday, Sgt. Bob Boese of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office said the mother of the infant was arrested last week. The arrest happened because of tips from the public and media reporting of the incident.

The Sheriff's Department will hold a Monday news conference to disclose the woman's identity and the child's condition. However, because of the ongoing nature of the investigation, the booking photo of the mother would likely not be released, reports KTLA5.
