Despite its price tag of $1,500, the Tag Heuer Connected Smartwatch is a hit among consumers that the firm has to boost its weekly production. Tag Heuer CEO Jean-Claude Biver says the firm would target to make 2,000 pieces weekly from its current production of 1,200.
The hike in production is in response to over 100,000 requests received by the Swiss watchmaker for the Android Wear-powered Connected Carrera watch from its retailers and subsidiaries globally. With the apparent high demand for the watch, the Tag Heuer smartwatch could be a major competitor to the Apple Watch, notes Androidcommunity.
The watch is sold only online, but Tag Heuer would suspend the online offer by May or June so physical stores could retail the timepiece, says Biver.
Consumers would soon have more options since LVMH Moet Hennessy Louie Vuitton SE plans to expand the models in 2016 and 2017, including diamond-crusted pieces and use of other materials. For another $1,500, buyers could upgrade to a limited edition mechanical watch, reports TechCrunch.
Although there are more expensive watches than Tag Heuer's, the attraction of the Connect is that users "feel fancy while still trying the latest technology.
