Reports are claiming that tech giant Apple has recently opened a new secret laboratory in Taiwan. The secret lab is believed to house Apple's newest engineering team that will work on new display technologies.
According to Bloomberg, the new secret lab has at least 50 engineers working on new screen technologies for future iPhones and iPads. It is important to note that most of Apple's flagship devices, except the Apple Watch, still employs the old LED technology. On the other hand, most of the company's rivals, like Samsung, has already transitioned to the newer OLED technology.
Apple's newest secret lab is located in the Longatan district in the Taiwanese city of Taiyuan. Aside from the recently opened Apple laboratory, the district is also known as the home to the headquarters of the Republic of China's Army.
The facility was previously occupied by Qualcomm. In fact, Apple has been employing local engineers to join its new secret lab. Reports claim that engineers from Qualcomm and display manufacturer AU Optronics have already joined the ranks of Apple engineers, according to The Verge. Experts believe that Apple is planning to develop a new display technology that relies on organic light-emitting diode.
The newly open Apple lab is also an hour-drive away from Foxconn, the company tasked for assembling the iPhone and other Apple devices.
Apple has yet to release a statement regarding the newly opened lab. However, this did not deter experts to speculate that Apple is pushing the development of its own display technology. Speculations claim that this new display technology will debut on the Apple devices by the start of 2018.
