James Cameron's "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" is set to be relived on the big screen in 3-D in 2016.
On Dec. 16, China-based studio DMG Entertainment announced its plans to work with Studiocanal and Cameron to produce a speacial 3-D rerelease of Cameron's 1991 action sci-fi film.
In his interview with The Hollywood Reporter, DMG Entertainment CEO Dan Mintz said that for a whole generation of fans, it was truly a chance to see the film that really set the bar for action and effects that all the movies today were trying to top in a completely new way, in the theaters and in 3-D.
In the same interview, director Cameron said that next year marked the 25th anniversary of "Terminator 2" and that had seemed like the perfect time to bring it back, but this time, in an all-new 3-D version. He added that if one had never seen the theatrical release, the upcoming 3-D version would be the one he wanted to see and remember.
Both companies will first release the "Terminator 2: Judgment Day's" 3D version in China, since the Arnold Schwarzenegger-led film is reportedly famous in the area in spite of not having a theatrical release in the country, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Released on July 3, 1991, Cameron's "Terminator 2" grossed $204.8 million in the United States and $315 million in other parts of the globe. Along with its success at the box office, the film also got four Academy Awards. "Terminator 2" stands as one of Studiocanal's best assets, as it boosted the earnings of the first film to more than $10 million.
With "Terminator 2" coming to theaters in 3-D, fans are set to witness another action-packed adventure that enhanced its 1991 theatrical release.
