Facebook's Events iOS update now lets users set dates they want to spend a night on the town at parties or other happenings, while a "Suggest For You" section is based on the social network's personal data about its users including where they live, their Likes, and who they hang out with.
Below that section there are categories including various sections such as Food & Drinks, Music, Nightlife, Sport & Fitness, Film & Photography, and Causes. These filters help Facebook to find the right event for account holders, such as a rock concert, wine tasting, or art gallery opening, and can be sorted by date.
In addition, Events has a new design that makes the section more eye-catching, according to Christian Science Monitor. It is also easier to use than in the past.
Facebook is one of a few social media sites or mobile apps that have developed event-planning features, which also includes Foursquare and Eventbrite, according to Tech Crunch. However, based on its collected personal data about people's Likes and little financial motivation to promote one event over another, on paper it is the best choice for matching people with parties.
Wired points out that Events gives people things to do, while similar apps tend to report what is happening in the community. If its venture is successful it will have a big advantage over rivals.
The Facebook feature causes people to spend more time in the real world instead of online spending time and money on the world's largest social network. However, Facebook has found a niche that most of its competitors do not offer, and some people have claimed it is why they cannot quit Facebook.
Facebook's Events section was rolled out more than a year ago. It originally focused on private parties, until the new product manager Aditya Koolwa realized that over 50 percent of people accessed Events for public events.
Events had 450 million active users as of July.
