The Oscars 2015 was slammed for being racist and sexist after the nominations were realized. For the second time since 1998, the Academy Awards had no nominees of color in the lead categories. Also, two female directors expected to be nominated were snubbed.
Because of the snubs, the Twitterverse was infuriated and #OscarsSoWhite has gone viral.
Twitter netizens were surprised to not see "Selma" actor David Oyelowo in the list of nominees for Best Actor. The nominees for the said award, which was won by "Dallas Buyer's Club" star Matthew McConaughey, were all white actors, who are "Foxcatcher" actor Steve Carell, "American Sniper" actor, Bradley Cooper, "The Imitation Game" actor Benedict Cumberbatch, "Birdman" actor Michael Keaton and "The Theory Of Everything" actor Eddie Redmayne.
For the Best Actress category, nominees "Gone Girl" actress Rosamund Pike, "Wild" actress Reese Witherspoon, "Still Alice" actress Julianne Moore, "Theory Of Everything" actress Felicity Jones and "Two Days, One Night" actress Marion Cotillard are all white.
The white actors nominated for Best Support Actor are "Birdman" actor Edward Norton, "Boyhood" actor Ethan Hawke, "Foxcatcher" actor Mark Ruffalo, "The Judge" actor Robert Duvall and "Whiplash" actor J.K. Simmons and for Best Supporting Actress are "Into The Woods" actress Meryl Streep, "Boyhood" actress Patricia Arquette, "Wild" actress Laura Dern, "Birdman" actress Emma Stone and "The Imitation Game" actress Keira Knightley.
Another category that irked the Twitterverse is the all-male list of Best Director nominees, who are "Birdman" director Alejandro G. Inarritu, "Boyhood" director Richard Linklater, "Foxcatcher" director Bennett Miller, "The Imitation Game" director Morten Tyldum and "The Grand Budapest Game" director Wes Anderson.
Aside from "Unbroken" director Angelina Jolie, "Selma" director Ava DuVernay was also snubbed. DuVernay failed to be the first African-American woman to be nominated by the Academy Award for the Best Director category.
