Before Lifetime movie "Whitney debuts on Jan. 17, Saturday at 8 p.m., one of its actors Suzzanne Douglas has spoken about the controversial Whitney Houston biopic.
"We all judged Bobby Brown, but they were meant for each other at that time in their lives. Are any of us perfect? We all have our mess, something that we have to struggle with and try to correct and are unable to fix," said Douglas, who recently ran into Cissy Houston at the Newark supper club, in a phone interview with NJ.
Playing the mother of late music legend in "Whitney," Douglas commented that there is "a tug and pull within Cissy of how to allow her daughter to be her own woman, and at the same time wanting to protect her children from the big bad world"
But instead of focusing on the mother's side of story, "Whitney" features Brown's side. In 2013, the mother has already given details on his side in a memoir titled "Remembering Whitney," in which she wrote, "As much as I love my daughter, Nippy was no angel. She could be a straight-up heifer to people," according to Rolling Stone.
Marking Angela Bassett's directorial debut, the "Whitney" biopic stars "America's Next Top Model" alum Yaya DaCosta playing the title role.
Before "Whitney," Douglas and Bassett have worked together in "How Stella Got Her Grove Back" and "The Parent 'Hood."
For Douglas, she does understand how her "Whitney" character feels. As a mother herself, she said she considered how she would feel if she had lost her daughter.
