Grossing $92 million from Friday to Sunday last week, "Mojin - The Lost Legend" proved to be a strong box-office contender as it had the third-biggest opening weekend ever for a Chinese film, according to EntGroup.
In an article by The Hollywood Reporter, the adventure epic also snatched the record for the largest single-day gross for a home-grown 3D film ($35.5 million on Saturday) and for the biggest opening day for a 3D Chinese film ($26.4 million on Friday).
The movie, co-produced by Wanda Pictures, Huayi Brothers and Enlight Pictures, is based on a popular Chinese online novel following the adventures of a team of young tomb raiders.
Directed by Wuershan, the movie is predicted to unseat "Monster Hunt" as the top-grossing film ever in the country.
Perhaps the reason for the warm critical reception, "Mojin" features a stellar cast including Huang Bo ("Lost in Thailand"), Shu Qi ("The Assassin") and Angelababy ("Young Detective Dee").
Meanwhile, slapstick period comedy "Surprise" came in second over the weekend after earning $23.5 million during its official first three days.
The film is an adaptation of an online comedy series produced by online streaming video giant Youku Tudou. Its cumulative gross stands at $41 million after the weekend.
Behind "Surprise" is DMG and Alcon Entertainment's "Point Break" remake, ending its 17-day China run with $37.9 million.
Occupying the fourth slot is "The Martian," which is now on its final week. Over the past week, the film has exceeded $90 million, adding $3.66 million for a cume of $91.5 million after 26 days.
Completing the top 10 are "The Master" ($3.19 million), "Impossible " ($2.12 million), "Fall in Love Like a Star" ($2.02 million), "Forever Love" ($1.93 million), "Our Times" ($1.30 million) and "Rush" ($1.25 million).
