A Native-American woman name Powaqa was raped in the film "The Revenant" which opens on Dec. 25. The rapist is a French trapper whom Hugh Glass, played by Leonardo DiCaprio and also a fur trapper, threatens to shoot on his head.
Glass chances upon the sexual assault on the character, played by Melaw Nakehk'o, after he escaped from a shallow grace and was on his way to avenge the death of his son in the hands of John Fitzgerald, played by Tom Hardy, reveals Refinery29.
The spoiler reiterates previous clarification by the producers of the film, due to an article by The Drudge Report, which claims DiCaprio's character was raped by a bear. He was viciously attacked by a female grizzly which was guarding her cubs.
Powaqa is one of the few women in the film directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. Refinery29 points out that her rape scene is not gratuitous but has context. It adds the scene's brutality stands out and makes Glass's several injuries pale in comparison.
One scene shows Glass riding a horse that falls off a cliff and lands on a giant Christmas tree. After laying unconscious for some time, Glass wakes up, crawls to his dead horse, cuts it open and removes its innards, takes off his clothes and lies inside the carcass for warmth, reports Theconcourse.
Film reviewers point out that with its theme and treatment, "The Revenant" is a movie that tests the viewer's manliness. Peter Travis, in a review for Rolling Stone, warns "movie pussies" that the film is not for them. Blogger Jeff Wells describes "The Revenant" in a tweet as "unflinchingly brutal" and likewise advises women not to watch the movie.
