Microsoft has yet to confirm that it is working on the rumored Surface Phone, which obviously will be Windows-powered if it ever will come into fruition, but the tech giant has also not ruled out the possibility of a Windows 10 smartphone that will slay the iPhone.
The rumors, in fact, on the so-called Surface Phone have been fired up by the boatload of hints coming from the Windows maker. And the latest batch of clues, according to Business Insider, came from Microsoft senior executive Chris Capossela. The Windows flagship phone has to reflect "breakthrough work," for it to seriously compete against Apple's iPhone, Capossela said.
For starters, the Surface Phone will have to be vastly different from the present crop of Windows phones, which sadly only account to a measly three percent of the global smartphone share. Per the same Business Insider report, Microsoft will have to package its rumored iPhone killer entirely different from what consumers have already seen and subsequently shunned from.
Most definitely, the Nokia Windows template will never suffice. Smartphone users' distaste of the model has been disastrous, leading to billions of dollars loss for Microsoft.
And it's clear that Capossela does not intend to take on the same course. He is looking on the slow but impressive feat achieved by Microsoft with the Surface Pro tablet. The Microsoft exec is well aware that the device clicked with Windows fans for successfully fusing the laptop and tablet - both in function and form.
The Surface Pro delivered on promised productivity features while managing to impress with the build and specs, never mind the high sticker price on the premium models. For sure, Microsoft will pick up on this incredible win.
But for the Surface Phone render it has to be unique. "We need some sort of spiritual equivalent on the phone side, that doesn't just feel like a phone for people who love Windows," Capossela said.
Thankfully, the rumored Surface Phone has something to start with on its quest to give the iPhone an interesting fight - the Windows 10 Mobile feature called Continuum that permits users to connect a Windows 10-powered mobile device on a monitor. And that screen is instantly transformed into a full-functioning desktop machine.
When is this happening or when exactly is the Microsoft Surface Phone release date, all fired up by Windows 10? Capossela is not specific on a precise timing but he allowed that for the envisioned iPhone killer Windows device to be realized, "we need time to actually go build that."
