Tom Cruise's "Mission: Impossible 5" co-actor Simon Pegg was hired to co-write the script for "Star Trek 3" with Doug Jung, according to Deadline.

The actor confirmed the news on his Twitter account and wrote:  "It's true! Simon is currently working on the screenplay for the third Star Trek film with Dark Blue writer, Doug Jung. - HC." Pegg will also play the USS Enterprise's chief engineer Montgomery Scott in "Star Trek 3."

The actor has several experiences with co-writing scripts including collaboration with filmmaker Edgard Wright for "Shaun of the Dead," "Hot Fuzz" and "The World's End." In addition, he co-wrote "Paul" with Nick Frost. As for Jung, he wrote "Confidence" and few episodes of "Big Love" and "Banshee."

Pegg and Jung replaced Patrick McKay, John D. Payne and Roberto Orci as scriptwriters for "Star Trek 3." Orci was also reportedly tapped to direct the franchise but he was also replaced by Justin Lin who is responsible for "Fast and the Furious 6."

Pegg is a good choice to write the script since he is a science fiction fan and he has a sense of humor. The actor can bring laughter into the film and reflect his geeky personality to it. Meanwhile, Jung can also deliver based on his writing experiences and he covered aliens on "Big Love," according to Cinema Blend.

Fans are anticipating for more news about  "Star Trek 3" but there is no official confirmation about the start of production. If the script needs to be rewritten, then the film may begin shooting early. If Pegg and Jung decide to start from scratch, it may take more time before the cast starts to shoot.

One disadvantage though will be the release of "Star Wars." Although the two movies will not be shown at the same time, it is still a challenge for "Star Trek" to be compared to the huge franchise.

"Star Trek 3" fans can watch the sequel as it hits theatres on July 8, 2016.
