It's been almost four years since the Rebuild Evangelion 3.33, and no follow-up movie has been released up to now. That wait might be finally over as a hype video circulating in the internet indicates that the final installment to the Evangelion rebuild series could finally hit the silver screen in August.
On a Facebook group created solely for Evangelion fans, a certain Edgar Barceinas Hernandez posted a 45-second video showing a hybrid type of Evangelion (Apparently a merged version of Asuka and Mari's Evas) battling what looks like an army of mass-producing EVAs.
If you are a fan of the original Neon Genesis Evangelion series, this particular scene highlights Asuka's finest hours as an EVA pilot, smashing and kicking the EVAs secretly manufactured by SEELE in case NERV deviates from its original plan. Sadly, it was also the last time Asuka to ever ride on her EVA again as the mass-producing EVAs butchered her with replicas of Lance of Longinus.
Going back to the video, details of the upcoming film were presented in the final frame, including possibly the release date of the fourth Rebuild of Evangelion film. While I am still struggling to read Japanese characters, the code 8.31.2016 may suggest the film's release date. Will it finally be on August 31?
The fourth film for the Rebuild of Evangelion series is probably the most anticipated of all the projects created by Hideaki Anno not only because it will conclude version 2.0 of the popular anime series, but also fans of the original series are looking for confirmation that the rebuild franchise isn't only a re-making of the entire series but a continuation to the events that took place more than 20 years ago in Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Originally planned for release in 2015, Rebuild of Evangelion 3.0 +1.0 has been shelved for a while due to Anno's involvement in the production of Godzilla Resurgence. As far as the video's validity is concerned, no date of release has been confirmed yet by Anno and the Studio. Still, it's better be hopeful than wait for nothing.
