Inter is currently at the fifth spot of the Serie A table, tied on points with the reeling fourth-placed team Fiorentina but has a lesser goal differential of +12 compared to the +18 of Viola. The two teams are only five points behind third-running club AS Roma with still eight games left before their current domestic campaigns end.

Only the top three finishers of the season will qualify in next season's Champions League competitions with the top two advancing directly into the group stage while the third-placed team will get into the playoff round of the premier club continental tournament of Europe.

The hosts was able to find the equalizer late in the game with a right-footed shot from center box by Belgian winger Radja Nainggolan to salvage the point in the standings.
