The Los Angeles could be inclining to draft a wide receiver instead of a quarterback come draft night, according to the latest NFL mock draft.
The Rams are projected to use their No. 15 pick on Texas Christian wide receiver Josh Doctson, adding another tail receiver to a group of playmakers, which includes Todd Gurley and Tavon Austin, according to Josh Katzenstein of The Detroit News.
Greg Cosell of Shutdown Center believes Doctson is one of the top WRs in the 2016 NFL draft class, along with Laquon Treadwell of Ole Miss. Cosell noted that Doctson is a "more naturally explosive" and has more "quick-twitch athleticism" than the other WR prospects.
Last season, the 23-year-old only played in eight full games for the TCU after suffering a slight setback, according to the stats reported by SB Nation. But despite missing the final three games, Doctson was still able to set records, posting 79 receptions for 1,327 yards and 14 touchdowns.
He would be an intriguing addition for the Rams and his stats from lasts season may be enough to prove he is a cut above the rest at the WR position.
However, in other mock draft scenarios, the Rams are touted to add another quarterback into their rotation of Nick Foles, Case Keenum and Sean Mannion. One of the QB prospects Los Angeles are reportedly considering is Paxton Lynch, considering the other two to quarterbacks (Jared Goff and Carson Wentz) are already unavailable at No. 15.
"If Goff and Wentz are gone, Memphis' Paxton Lynch is thought to be next on the list," Nick Wagoner of ESPN wrote. "If Lynch is there, the Rams could consider themselves lucky, or they could ask why he isn't already gone."
But if the Rams fail to get any of their quarterback prospects in the draft, focusing on Mannion's development as the team's other reliable QB.
Mannion, a third round pick in 2015, only played one game for the Rams last season. But despite the very limited playing time, the Rams seem to have Mannion as part of their long-term development at the quarterback position.
"I'm excited to watch him develop and move through that second year, especially with some familiarity with the system," Rams coach Jeff Fisher said, reports ESPN.
"There were some minor system changes, but he's got a football brain, and processes it. Gets the ball out. He's changed his body a little bit."
The Rams have probably many factors to consider in their No. 1 selection, but selecting a quarterback appears to weigh more than choosing a wide receiver.
