"The Vampire Diaries" season 8 and "The Originals" season 4 are expected to have more crossovers in their upcoming episodes.
Just recently, Candice Accola-King's character Caroline Forbes made a dire reference about Klaus in "The Vampire Diaries," and viewers started wondering if this meant the two characters would reunite very soon.
While speaking with TV Line, executive producer Julie Plec said that there are indeed big hopes for Caroline and Klaus' reunion especially since both shows on The CW have been renewed for at least another season.
Plec added that their decision to ask Caroline to mention Klaus' name served as a clue when it comes to the upcoming crossovers.
"It's definitely a hint. This year, as we've crossed over, we've acknowledged 'The Vampire Diaries' and 'The Originals' shared universe. As we know from 'The Originals,' there's a prophecy predicting the demise of the Mikaelson family, so it was a nice little tease for viewers of that show to ask themselves, 'Wait, what the hell happened to Klaus?'" Plec said.
Meanwhile, the exec also said that it is very rare for two shows to have a direct connection with each other so they plan to maximize this connection in the near future.
"It's a rare luxury to have two shows in a shared universe that you could do that. So to not do it feels like we're missing a really fun creative opportunity, a way to celebrate both shows. But it's not like anyone over at the network is calling us and being like, 'You need two crossovers this year.' I think it'd be fun to keep finding small, organic ways to do it. Like when we had Matt Donovan show up on 'The Originals," Plec explained.
In other news, there are still ongoing rumors that Nina Dobrev will return to "The Vampire Diaries" to reprise her role as Elena Gilbert. Just recently, rumors broke that she could return as Elena's darker and more villainous doppelganger Katherine. However, Plec refused to comment regarding these reports.
"The Vampire Diaries" and "The Originals" airs Fridays at 8 and 9 p.m. ET on The CW.
