The last movie in the "Divergent" franchise is supposed to be released as "The Divergent Series: Ascendant" in 2017, which will coincide with "World War Z 2" and a reboot of "The Mummy" in the big screen. However, after the third installment performed poorly at the box office, Lionsgate has to switch its plans, an insider told Variety.

The news came out before Lionsgate decided to start with shooting in Atlanta this summer. Lionsgate's television group will be in-charged with the production. The source added that everything is not yet finalized, and it is still uncertain whether the main stars including Woodley, Theo James and Ansel Elgort will still be part of the "Divergent" finale TV movie.

There is a speculation that Lionsgate is still preparing the storylines with the current cast, but it is reportedly going to get a new set of cast to head the TV movie. It is still uncertain if the "Age of Adaline" director Lee Toland Krieger will helm the TV movie which may feature a spinoff series.

As the news of "Divergent" finale TV movie broke this week, Woodley, who played Tris Prior, expressed her shock when she was asked about the news. It turned out that she had no idea about it.

"Honestly, I was on a plane when all that happened and I landed," Deadline quoted Woodley as saying. "I'm like, 'Whoa, what's going on?' I need to talk and find out what the details are."

The "Divergent" franchise based on Veronica Roth's novels is about a futuristic society where people are divided into different factions. As the people step into adulthood, they have to choose the faction they want to belong in.

Lionsgate is reportedly in the process of negotiation with different networks. The studio has not yet aired its side regarding the "Divergent" finale rumors.
