The video, deliberately broadcast by Shavania to shame her daughter, started with the mother hitting Nia with a ruler. Later, she dropped the ruler and used her fists to “discipline” Nia. Even if the girl was crying and not fighting back, instead pleading with Shavania to stop, the very angry woman continue to physically and verbally abuse her daughter.

Since the incident was broadcast, Georgia Police turned over to child welfare authorities a copy of the five-minute video.

The report said that Shavania later posted that she loves her daughter with all her heart but she would not tolerate the teen disrespecting her. According to Savannah Police, Nia said she still feels safe at home despite the beating incident.

Darnisha Green, spokeswoman for the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department, said several people reported the video to the police and sought Shavania’s arrest over the weekend. Green said their special victims unit had looked into the case and talked to the mother and daughter.
