The San Antonio Spurs have offered a job for former New Orleans Pelicans head coach Monty Williams, according to multiple sources.
Williams, who compiled 172-221 record as head coach of the Pelicans, is offered a position that hasn't been fully defined yet. The Spurs reportedly want Williams to pick either a role as an assistant coach, a player development coach, a front-office job or a hybrid.
Despite receiving similar offers from different teams, Williams finds the Spurs' job offer most interesting since Williams' in-laws live in that area and they have been helping him take care of his five children since his wife got killed in a car accident.
"I can't wait to get back and start coaching," Williams said in an interview with ESPN's Hanna Storm via Hoops Rumors. "I wouldn't even think that if I didn't know, one, my wife would want me to. My kids talk about it all the time. And there have been some things that have happened in my life lately that have allowed me to get that back."
Forward Jonathon Simmons is now entitled to receive the full salary of $874,636 for the coming season after the Spurs decided to keep on the roster beyond the guarantee date.
After providing solid contributions in 15 minutes per game last season, Simmons is expected to have a larger role with the Spurs this coming year.
"This is a great setting for them to be in situations like this. That's how you build confidence in them, and that's how coaches get confidence in them, too. If they see that putting Kyle in as a decision maker at the end of the game is a good option for us... there's different things that we're always trying to pick up, learn on and also stretch them mentally, and get them better as well as work on their individual game," Spurs assistant Becky Hammon on Kyle Anderson and Simmons.
