Jennifer Lopez will be soon seen playing the role of a badass drug mafia. The actress-singer has just landed the role of real-life drug lord Griselda Blanco for an upcoming HBO TV movie.
Lopez is set to topline an untitled TV movie revolving around the late drug Lord, who was also known as The Cocaine Godmother. The movie will focus on the rise and fall of the notorious drug dealer, who reportedly revolutionized the U.S. drug trade during the 1970s and 1980s, thereby, becoming the most powerful female cartel member of all time.
Blanco was said to be responsible for more than 200 murders. Despite that, she was convicted of only three murders for which she was arrested in 1985. She was released from prison and deported to her native country Columbia in 2004. She died having been shot twice in the head in Columbia at the age of 69, Miami Herald reported.
Lopez has certainly landed a meaty role of the fascinating-enough figure. Blanco also got a bit of black widow in her as she was known to have killed her first two husbands. She bore four sons in her lifetime and was known to be openly bisexual.
This is not the first time that the drug lord's story has become the subject of a movie. While documentary film "Cocaine Cowboys" is primarily based on her life, another film titled "The Godmother" is currently in production, which stars Catherine Zeta-Jones as Blanco. Lopez too seems to be smitten by the story of the notorious criminal since long time.
"I've been fascinated by the life of this corrupt and complicated woman for many years," The Hollywood Reporter quoted the 47-year-old actress as saying. "The idea of teaming with HBO felt like the perfect fit for finally bringing Griselda's story to life."
Apart from starring in the lead role, Lopez will also serve as an executive producer on the project through her Nuyorican Productions company alongside Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and the singer-actress's manager, Benny Medina, as well as LBI Entertainment's Julie and Rick Yorn. "Magic Mike" actor Alex Pettyfer is also attached as a co-executive producer and as of now, it is unclear if he will have any onscreen role in the movie or not.
