"Ghostbusters" star Leslie Jones' another cyberattack case gets more support from celebrities. Images of Jones being nude, her passport, driver's license and a racist video were posted on her personal website. Her website was taken down by her camp on Aug. 24, Wednesday.
The celebrities who showed their support to Jones include Lena Dunham, Ellen DeGeneres and Katy Perry. Through a tweet, Dunham asked to turn their anger to trolls into love for Jones while DeGeneres tweeted that the world needs the laughter brought by the beautiful and talented Jones. In #StandWithLeslie hashtag, the "Roar" singer advised Jones to ignore the misogynoir crime.
In the wake of the release of "Ghostbusters" in July, which, despite the controversies over the all-female comedy remake of the 1984 supernatural hit was a blockbuster success, Jones received abuse from Internet trolls. Instead of celebrating the success, she quit Twitter because of the hurtful comments.
The 48-year-old actress stars alongside Kate McKinnon, Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig in Paul Feigh's film. However, her dilemma did not end there.
The online harassment of Jones who also stars in "Saturday Night Live" has hurt other people in the entertainment industry as well. Today anchor Tamron Hall cried for her after hearing the news. She revealed what happened to Jones hit her in a bad spot, for Jones and for all the bullied kids.
Hall's co-anchor Billy Bush said people are usually urged to stand up for bullies. Jones seemingly made a triumphant comeback on social media after being hurt last month, but in her case, it got worse.
Jones' cyberattack case is now being taken care of by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a part of the Department of Homeland Security. The ICE office in New York is looking into the breach.
Details of the investigation were not given. As to why the ICE is the one handling Jones' case instead of the Federal Bureau of Investigation is still unclear, Los Angeles Times reported.
The FBI handled the cyberattack cases of previous celeb victims. High profile hacking cases include Scarlett Johansson in 2011, Jennifer Lawrence in 2014.
