The Brooklyn Nets aggressively tried to rebuild in the offseason, adding several rising stars like Jeremy Lin, rookie Caris LeVert, Tyler Johnson and Allen Crabbe. Would they be enough to guide the Nets to success?
Critics have taken several swipes at the moves made by new general manager Sean Marks and head coach Kenny Atkinson. While the Nets are not expected to be among the favorites this 2016-17 NBA season, the rebuilding process has taken a hit.
Shaun Powell of NBA.com made his assessment of the Nets off-season moves. Based on his feedback, the efforts of the Nets are not that striking enough to see them hit it off well for the coming season.
The assessment renders that the Nets are probably the ones who failed to make significant improvements. No franchise player was taken in though that honor has been tied up to center Brook Lopez.
Lopez has been injury-prone but has proven to be affective. Unfortunately, he doesn’t seem to be the type of player one may call a franchise player, someone Marks could consider trading off for better talent , Nets Daily reported.
So what about Lin, LeVert, Crabbe and Johnson? Could the Nets have done better?
The moves have drawn flak as well with Powell calling them as potentially reckless. But giving Marks the benefit of the doubt, it could all depend on what Atkinson has in mind for the Nets this coming season.
On paper, the Nets don’t seem to have the necessary tools to make an impact for the coming season. It should be worth noting though that several teams in the past have gone the same route. Depending on the team’s philosophy, all that somehow changed when the actual games underway.
While criticism is expected, this could be one aspect that the Nets are banking on. The coach and players have something to prove and that could probably be positive that one can draw out of the low-level moves made in the offseason.
