Showrunner Ilene Chaike talked to TVLine about the new season of "Empire."
Chaike talked about the new characters coming this season and how they will impact the show and other existing characters.
"It will be all of those things - and Lucious plays a big role in all of that, too. The history of when Cookie met Lucious intersects with this story in the present day. And there's one other shade for Cookie in this story with Taye Diggs' character Angelo: Pygmalion. It's a Pygmalion story that's unique to Cookie. We wanted to see and tell a story for Cookie that we've never told before. And if you think about Cookie in Season 1 and all she faced, we wanted an arc that was just as big, that talked about facing new challenges," the showrunner said.
Meanwhile, talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Chaike said that "Empire" Season 3 episodes are "thoughtful."
"It's more attentive to character and detail, and we found that we've got stories that we are really excited about and that we think are compelling. We're not having to reach to what some people might have thought were slightly ludicrous places to find our big moments. They're coming out of story, they're coming out of character and they are consistent with these stories that we've begun."
"Season 3 picks up with Hakeem left at the altar, Lucious and Anika newly married, and someone falling off a roof during a fight. In other storylines, Lucious wants to make his streaming service a huge success, but his half-brother Tariq becomes a distraction as he leads a federal task force investigating him," reads the synopsis for "Empire" Season 3, episode 1.
