Blue and black? Alternately white and gold? Recently the social networking world emitted in a serious verbal confrontation over a photo of a dress, initially posted on Tumblr, which gives off an impression of being two diverse shading mixes relying upon who takes a gander at it.
According to Health, as per a Business Insider meeting with the lady who posted the photograph and later saw the dress in individual at a wedding, the sheath is really blue and dark. Both Mashable and Wired have credited the photograph's overexposure and poor white equalization for making the dress look much lighter than it is when it's all said and done yet that still doesn't clarify why some individuals see the dress' genuine nature, while others basically see what the cam (inaccurately) archived.
Health.com also asked Dr. Lotto, a neuroscientist who had a TED Talk engagement about perception, on his take on the "changing" colors of the dress.
Dr. Lotto said that the brain always using context in seeing the relationship between many different colors, not just one thing in isolation. He continued to say that those individuals who see the dress white and gold will notice that the light shifted toward blue but in reality, the brain tells them that it is really a white surface and a yellowish surface.
On the other hand, those who see it black and blue, the individual could be using more local context to get a sense of what is happening, noticing how the gold bit causes the white to look blue.
Lotto added that the past experiences, immediate and instant, can and may influence how to see things like color and saturation. This also explains why some people have reported seeing different versions of the dress.
In addition, Vice did their own investigation on the matter and seeks the assistance of a visual color researcher from the University of Washington Dr. Jay Neitz, PhD.
Dr. Neitz has several theories about lights and colors to explain what happened on the colors of the dress. He said that it has something to do with color constancy, he made example of the color red, he said that if someone will go into a room and turn on the light that is completely red, the white things will reflect at all red lights and red will also reflect red. In this case, he said, the brain tries to process what color something is in the red light, its best guess is white, even if in normal lighting it's actually red.
He even put himself in the example when he used to own a red Volkswagen when it was parked in a completely dark area. He was about to get to his car when the vehicle next to his car had put on the break light and he was surprised to see that his red beetle is suddenly white.
Dr. Neitz said that probably, that's what happened in the picture, the picture was probably taken in a bluish lighting which persuades the brain to see the dress as white and gold. He went on to explain the other side, the blue and black. At this point, he supported Dr. Lotto's theory, it's all about past experiences and he said that it is normal for others to see different from your perspective.
