Novak Djokovic will attempt to keep his bid alive at the Shanghai Masters 2016 when the Serb meets Germany's Mischa Zverev in the quarterfinal round of the ATP 1000 Masters event.

Djokovic has kept himself on course to defend his Shanghai Masters crown after the 12-time Grand Slam winner defeated Canada's Vasek Pospisil 6-4 6-4. Djokovic, who is coming off an elbow injury that forced him to skip the China Open, was pleased with his victory, putting him closer to winning his eighth Tour-level title this season.

"I thought it was a great quality of tennis today from both players," Djokovic said, reports the ATP's official website. "I was very pleased with the way I played from the first to last point. I don't think I dropped my level at all."

Following his stunning loss at the US Open final against Stan Wawrinka, Djokovic admitted he has been going through personal issues. The world No. 1 said winning titles and remaining at the top of the rankings are no longer his priority, but an impressive start at the Shanghai Masters suggests Djokovic is back in his old deadly form.

Djokovic next faces Zverev, who managed a three-setter win against Spain's Marcel Granollers 6-7(4) 6-4 6-1 in their Round of 16 clash. Zverev, the older brother of next generation star Alexander Zverev, continues to play remarkable tennis in Shanghai after defeating higher ranked opponents in the second and third round of the tournament.

However, Zverev, who ranks No. 110 in the world would be hard-pressed playing against Djokovic, whom the 29-year-old German will face for the first time since 2009 at The Open 13 in Marseille.

The winner between Djokovic and Zverev could face either Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut or ninth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the semifinal round of the tournament.

Bautista Agut dismissed Serb Viktor Troicki with a 6-3 6-3 victory, while Tsonga, last year's Shanghai Masters runner-up, defeated Alexander Zverev 6-7(4) 6-2 7-5. Bautista Agut and Tsonga are tied at 2-2 in their FedEx Head2Head matchup, but the Spaniard has won their last two meetings, most recently at the ATP 1000 Masters event in Miami this year.
