"Pokemon Go" has only included the original Generation 1 Pokemon ever since it launched earlier this year. Most recently Ditto has been officially added, completing all of the non-legendary Gen. 1 creatures. Niantic Labs now confirms that even more Pokemon will be added to the game.
A marketing campaign from Starbucks had previously leaked this information, teasing that the world of "Pokemon Go" was expanding. It has now been confirmed when the developers posted the announcement on Twitter, Games Radar reported. It was detailed that new Pokemon are indeed being released and that more details will be given on Dec. 12, Monday.
Data miners had also reportedly indicated that the expansion will cover all of the Generation 2 Pokemon. These are Pokemon first introduced in "Pokemon Gold, Silver and Crystal" games for the Gameboy Color. Included in this list of Pokemon are Chikorita, Totodile, Cyndaquil and the Legendary Celebi.
It is further stated that this data mining result comes from the same list that leaked the release of Ditto, indicating that it may be accurate. Fans of the mobile game should still the information with a grain of salt, however, until Niantic gives the official update.
However, there is also the possibility that this expansion of new Pokemon is only for the Legendary Pokemon from Generation 1. This list includes Mew, Mewtwo, Zapdos, Moltres and Articuno. Before the game launched Niantic teased they would only be made available through special events and there is the possibility that Starbucks' advertisements refer to this.
According to Forbes, it is more likely that Niantic means to add the Generation 2 Pokemon and not just the Generation 1 legendaries. This would reportedly allow Sprint and Starbucks to take advantage of their new deals and turn their retail stores into PokeStops.
The winter season would also benefit the game as players may not want to risk going out and braving the weather. In order to work around this and catch Pokemon players would be forced to spend real money on in-game items like Incense.
