2016 has been the year for smartphones and comes with it is the rise of the application Android and iOS applications. Here are the top ten apps of 2016:

1. Facebook

This social media giant is the world's largest social networking site and it keeps on expanding. Facebook, according to data gathering company Nielsen, has an average unique users of more than 146 million per month throughout the year, a 14 percent rise from the records since October 2015.

2. Facebook Messenger

There is not much question why the Messenger app comes second since Facebook requires people to download the app if users want to message their friends and loved ones. Messenger has seen a 28 percent increase in user percentage after garnering more than 129 million unique users per month.

3. YouTube

 The 11-year-old video streaming company has been the go-to site for watching videos. It upped its users from 2016 by 20 percent behind roughly 114 million users per month. YouTube is the leading Google app of 2016.

4. Google Maps

Lost? Google Maps is the answer. The map app has seen a 22 percent increase in users from 2015 with an average unique users of more than 105 million a month.

5. Google Search

The fifth on the list is the third straight Google application which has an average of 104 million users a month behind a nine percent increase from last year. For better use, Google has put a voice feature to for quicker searching.

6. Google Play

Google Play is an essential for Android smartphone users as it is the marketplace for downloading apps and other digital content. It is the lowest in this list in terms of increase of users (8 percent) as it is already a staple for user.

7. Gmail

Gmail has definitely taken over Yahoo as the most preferred mailing site and app in the world. It has an average of 88 million per users after an 18 percent increase.

8. Instagram

This photo-sharing app is a trailblazer in the app scene and is continuously expanding after a 36 percent increase in users off its roughly 75 million users per month. As the year ends, users can view their best nine photos of the year with the Best Nine website.

9. Apple Music

Although Apple Music is only available for iOS devices, it barged through the top 10 with its features for Apple smartphones. It has a 68 million average users per month.

10. Amazon App

Amazon has seen the biggest user increase with 43 percent. The American electronic commerce company became more accessible with the Amazon app and users are utilizing it to purchase and order things they want.
