The saying that “the show must go on” was demonstrated by the Taiwanese band Mayday which held its Just Rock It RE: Live Concert Arena on New Year’s Day. Band leader Wen Shang-Yi, also known as Monster, performed even if his mother just died in December.
Monster shared the new of the death of his mother, known to the band’s fans as Monster Mum, after 12 years of being sick and bedridden. “I brought some beer and an all-access pass for her to ‘invite’ her to the concert, to visit the five boys she misses and the fans who wished her well, so I have to perform well for all nine shows and leave no regrets,” Wen Shang-Yi wrote on his Facebook page.
Tribute to Mum
At the same time, Monster posted again a live video of the band’s song “Dokodemo Door” to pay tribute to his deceased mother written in memory of the band’s early days and reflect on Mayday members spending time with Monster Mum, Toggle reported. Ashin, a member of Mayday, recalled Monster Mum as being always optimistic, humorous and friendly by keeping the bad away from the band and only sharing with them the good.
Even if Monster continues to grieve the passing away of his mother, he attended band rehearsal and did not discuss her death with the band so as not to affect their mood.
Chinese Beatles
Mayday was one of the Chinese artists that performed in Malaysia in 2016, along with Eason Cha, Sammi Cheng and Andy Hui, Star2 reported. An alternative rock bad, Mayday, which has five members, is known as the Chinese Beatles. The five are former high school friends who established Mayday in 1997.
“Mayday is starting to challenge the assumption that English-speaking pop stars are global stars, and Chinese-speaking acts are only regional ones,” CNBC quoted Meredith Oyen, assistant professor of history at University of Maryland.
