Because “Bonnie Bears: Entangled Worlds” is the only movie for children to be shown during Spring Festival, the film is expected to perform well at the box office. The 20 million yuan the animated feature earned during the limited advance screening on Saturday is an indicator of the movie’s potential income.

Seventh Place

On its first day of exhibition, the movie was in seventh place on a weak weekend box-office down by two-thirds, Variety reported. The movie comes from a popular CCTV cartoon show about Briar and Bramble which are tree-loving bears.

Topping the box-office for the Jan. 20-22 weekend was “Arrival,” a newly released sci-fi drama with a box office of $7.4 million. It was followed by “Passengers” ($6.87 million), Chinese comedy “Some Like It Hot,” ($5.7 million), “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” ($3.5 million), Chinese animation “Bakkom Bear: Agent 008” ($3.13 million) and Jackie Chan’s “Railroad Tigers” ($1.36 million). After “Bonnie Bears: Entangled Woods” came “The Great Wall” ($1.02 million), “Kubo and the Two Strings” ($680,000) and “Hackshaw Ridge” ($560,000).

Animated Water Challenge

The movie, directed by Lin Huida and Lin Yongchan, premiered on Jan. 19. During the event, attended singers Li Qi and Shang Wenjie, and comedians Bao Chunlai and Sun Jianhong, the directors shared they were challenged in making animated water for the movie, but they overcame the challenge, China.org reported.

Since there are few choices for children during the Lunar New Year film holiday season, the movie – described by one of the film’s producers as better than previous installments when it comes to character, story and technology – is expected to attract Chinese kids. Seven Chinese and Chinese co-production films would be shown during the Chinese New Year holidays.
