China has never been a powerhouse international beauty contests. Based on a tally of winners of the four international pageants, the powerhouses are Brazil, Venezuela and the Philippines, host of the Miss Universe 2016 to be held on Monday, Jan. 30.

The three countries produced winners for the four top international pageants, namely Miss World, Miss Universe, Miss International and Miss Earth. Venezuela topped the list with 22, followed by the Philippines with 13 and Venezuela 6.

2 Miss China Winners

However, since Miss World started in 1951, two Miss People’s Republic of China had won the crown. They are Zhang Zilin in 2007 and Yu Wenxia in 2012. Significantly, the two won when the contest was held in China, a frequent host because of the city of Sanya’s bid to raise its profile as an international tourist destination with the city and private donors paying $4.8 million in 2003 for a license to host the pageant, plus another $31 million spent on infrastructure, according to Quartz.

In one site, Oddshark, which lists all 86 candidates, Miss China was in the bottom 14 with an odds to win at +9000. The candidates with the highest odds are Miss Australia Caris Tiivel and Miss Philippines Maxine Medina tied at +550.

Miss Colombia Tops Lists

However, in the four other sites, it is Miss Colombia Andrea Tovar who topped the list of Pinnacle, Sports Insights and William Hill. In PEP.ph, it is Miss Venezuela Mariam Habach who is on top of the list which is not surprising since Venezuela is one of the top 3 powerhouse nations when it comes to international beauty pageants. In the PEP.ph list, Miss Colombia is in fourth spot.

In Pinnacle, her odds are 3.40, while the second-placer, Miss Brazil Raissa Santana is a far 9.74. In SportsInsights, her odds are +250, while in second place, Miss Peru Valeria Piazza is +700. In William Hill, Miss Colombia’s odds are 3.0, while second-placer Miss Venezuela is 5.5.

Miss Colombia is a 23-year-old Industrial Design and Photo Production degrees holder. According to PEP.ph, her gown during the preliminary competition resulted in mixed feelings among followers of the Miss Universe 2016 for Andrea Tovar. She is the daughter of a physician and business manager. Andrea Tovar makes history as the longest-reigning Miss Colombia since she held the crown for 16 months and for day. She was crowned Miss Colombia 2015 on Nov. 16, 2015.

Miss China Li ZhenYing is 23 and from Shanghai. She is a student of Administration at Polytechnic University. Unlike Miss Colombia who had held the crown for more than one year, Li Zhenying was crowned only on Nov. 12, 2016. She towers at 6’ 1”.
