Series stars Claire Foy and Matt Smith, who play Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip respectively, were seen starting production for "The Crown" season 2 in London, the Daily Mail reported. Smith, especially, has been noted as he was pictured driving a 1956 Lagonda Coupe for the shoot. The shoot in London precedes the filming of one of the most awaited arcs of "The Crown" season 2 which involves the visit of US President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jackie Kennedy in London.

This "The Crown" season 2 news comes a few weeks after the Netflix series became a major award contender for this year's Emmy ceremony after scooping up a few trophies during the Golden Globe Awards. The biographical drama, produced and created by "The Queen" screenwriter Peter Morgan, won the Best Series - Drama award last January, Deadline reported.

The show defeated perennial favorite "Game of Thrones" and newcomers "Stranger Things," "This Is Us" and "Westworld." Foy also took home the award for Best Actress in a Television Series - Drama on the same night.

The series' early victories in precursor television award giving bodies could mean it may be the show that will be triumphant in the drama series category in September's Emmys. With "Game of Thrones" sitting out of the race due to its late airing in the summer, "The Crown" joins a growing list of shows that may win the highly competitive rivalry.

"The Crown" season 2 is expected to be released on Netflix in the last quarter of the year. Watch the trailer for the show's first season in the video below.
