Unemployment for April also ticked down to 5.4 percent. This indicates that the U.S. job market is slowly recovering, and consumers have more spending money for leisure activities.

Local police stations have urged travelers to follow all traffic laws while enjoying their holiday travel. They should be very careful when traveling in areas with heavy traffic.

Deborah Hersman, National Safety Council (NSC) CEO said that her organization informs the public about potential risks on roadways to prevent "needless tragedies," according to Uncover California. The NSC estimated that about 41,000 injuries will occur during Memorial Day weekend this year, and several could require hospital care.

An AAA report revealed that 33 million Americans rack up an average of 50 miles (80.5 km) during any Memorial Day weekend.  Traffic during the 3-day weekend has been increasing steadily since Memorial Day became a red letter day.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported that 48 million Americans suffer from food poisoning yearly, according to ABC-7 Chicago.  When grilling burgers or hot dogs, a meat thermometer can prevent super rare food.

Grillers should also keep barbecue grills free of grease and cobwebs, which could catch fire. Also a kid-free area should be made three feet surrounding the grill.

Every year 500,000 Americans are hospitalized due to insect bites. Those people with major allergic reactions should bring medications with them for outdoor activities.

Families with kids should also take safety precautions at home and on the road. Parents should keep an eye on their children, and especially when they go swimming.

Memorial Day was recognized as a U.S. national holiday in 1971. It was originally observed as Decoration Day in 1868, to honor Civil War veterans.
