Meanwhile, the late actress' father told TMZ that she was suffering from several medical ailments over the past two years, including pneumonia, sinusitis and sleep apnea. Her father has not yet suspected any foul play and has indicated the medical complications as the probable cause.

Peterson started her acting career at the tender age of nine, when she landed herself a role in the musical film "Annie," followed by cameo roles in "Father Murphy" and "Silver Spoons."

Before bagging her role in "Can't Buy Me Love," she had already done a couple of other small projects. In the teen romantic comedy, which went on to win several awards, Peterson had played the role of a cheerleader, Cindi Mancini, who has been hired by high school nerd, played by Patrick Dempsey, for $1,000 to pretend to be his girlfriend for a month.

After the huge success of the movie, both Peterson and her co-star attained teen idol status and subsequently appeared on the covers of several teen magazines. She went on to star in a couple of other projects like "Listen To Me." Her last on-screen role came in the 1994 film "Wind Runner," after which she retired from Hollywood.

Peterson moved back to her roots in Colorado, where she started modelling and joined back school. The actress was also dabbling in writing for the past couple of years. She is survived by her husband David and their two children, Daily Mail reported.
