A world record £100-million transfer offer by English club Manchester United for Welsh winger Gareth Bale was rejected by Spanish club Real Madrid, according to ESPN. The amount would have topped Bale's own transfer fee record of £85 million when he was sent to Real from Tottenham Hotspur in 2013.

After acquiring fullback Matteo Darmian from Torino and closing a deal with Bayern Munich for Bastian Schweinsteiger, United manager Louis van Gaal is allegedly not finished in retooling the team's roster yet as he tried to take Bale from the Spanish giants with a massive offer.

The Wales international is one of the most highly sought-after footballers in the world today and even a record-breaking amount of cash is not enough for Los Blancos coach Rafael Benitez to let go of his prized playmaker.

It was actually reported that Benitez wants the 25-year-old to "play a more prominent role" in his system, which quenched any hopes for the Red Devils to snag away the six-foot winger.

In just two seasons playing for Real, Bale had become one of the most important players at the Bernabéu side, scoring 39 goals in 92 appearances overall for the La Liga team.

While Benitez his highly fond of Bale, Bleacher Report's Tom Sunderland indicated that the Welsh man had received some criticisms from Los Vikingos fans due to his slight drop in form last season where he only scored 17 goals in 48 games.

However, reports have also arisen that Bale is eager to play a more improved game this coming season. Sunderland even mentioned his desire to contend against the likes of Barca rising star Neymar.
