"Torn" singer Natalie Imbruglia released a new album, but it has no original songs, only covers by male artistes.

The singer's aptly titled album "Male" features covers by artistes such as Tom Petty, Cat Stevens and Neil Young and includes tracks by bands such as The Cure and their famous song "Friday I'm in Love."

Imbruglia told Reuters  that covering female artistes felt "scary" as the comparisons are more direct. She said turning the tables with songs covered by male singers gave a different interpretation and that the emotions came from a different place automatically.

The singer who elaborated on her choice of songs for the album and told the news agency she had to be smart about what songs suited her voice as a pose to what she liked.

The singer also pointed out that it was her romantic streak that led her to the choice of love songs, but she wanted the album to be classic and vocally driven rather than have the album feature electronic sounds.

Meanwhile, Imbruglia told Entertainment Weekly   the songs all tied in around a theme about finding a life partner and the sentiments surrounding those emotions.

Prior to covering Daft Punk's "Instant Crush" Imbruglia told the publication she went online to research the lyrics and discovered the love story behind them, which she says she wanted to highlight in her album.

The track "The Summer" by Josh Pyke is the song Imbruglia says she is the most proud of on the album as it is challenging to sing. The singer's last album "Come to Life" was released in 2009.
