After "Tokyo Ghoul" Season 2 concluded in March, the next question is "when's the next season?"

The second season of "Tokyo Ghoul" also known as "Tokyo Ghoul: Root" just ended with a lot more questions than answers.

Anticipation for Season 3 of "Tokyo Ghoul" reached its peak with the cliffhanging, yet ambiguous ending which saw Kaneki and Arima face to face in what would seemingly be a battle to the death.

Only it was never shown, and the cryptic ending is left in debate, with the fate of Kaneki still unknown, in classic anime fashion.

Yet, there have been numerous attempts to answer the question. From When-will.net:

"Release date of Tokyo Ghoul season 3 - summer 2015 (to be confirmed)"

But summer is already upon us, and there remains no announcement of "Tokyo Ghoul season 3."

Fans of the Tokyo Ghoul manga have forwarded speculation that the anime will follow the plot of the manga, although that is not exactly a cardinal rule.

There is also the theory that technically, there wouldn't be a "Chapter 3" or "Season 3" as we know it, as the Tokyo Ghoul anime is known to leave out details from the manga and does not see a need to adhere to it.

Since there are no clear answers, fans are left to speculate and from the "Tokyo Ghoul" wikia forum, a response to the query, "when will season 3 be released?"

 Commenter Harostar said:

"Honestly, there would be a lot of issues in doing a third season considering how far the second season deviated from the manga. Unless the third season is another anime-original piece, " the comment stated.

"The decisions to skip out on entire story arcs and derail the development of several characters would make adapting ":Re" very difficult.

"Tokyo Ghoul :Re" is the sequel to the story that was witnessed in season 2/Root. According to When Will, the story alleges that Kaneki is now known as Haise Sasaki. He is an amnesiac and has no memory of his past as Kaneki. He now heads a special division of the Commission of Counter Ghoul which is called Quinx Squad.

The Quinx squad is unique because they undergo surgeries similar to Kaneki which combines ghoul organs with their own, thus giving them special abilities.

If Season 3, :Re, or any iteration of "Tokyo Ghoul" emerges, it is likely to follow a similar story arc, but it would not be clear if it's the continuation of Kaneki's story, as the anime has yet to establish the fate of Kaneki.
