The Blues' head honcho was said to be eager to acquire another top-level defender to complete his team's starting back four before the new season starts on August 8. Chelsea is scheduled to meet Swansea City in their opener on Saturday at the Stamford Bridge and Mourinho was reportedly having doubts about his current defensive lineup.

The report said that the Pensioners are willing to shell out up to £15 million for the 25-year-old Doncaster native, but there is still no response from Pochettino.

Mourinho lost his reliable defender Filipe Luis to Atletico Madrid this summer and he is looking for someone to replace the Brazilian.

Recently, there were rumors that Chelsea was targeting Augsburg left back Baba Rahman for £25 million. Mourinho may have grown tired of the negotiations which might be the reason why he turned around and looked for another option.

ESPN indicated that Tottenham may accept the deal as they still have another decent option at left back with the young and up and coming Welsh defender Ben Davies.

However, the report also noted that this might just be another "classic misdirection" move from The Special One just to force the German club to release their 21-year-old prodigy out of WWK Arena.

The truth might be exposed on or before Premier League's weekend opening games.
