The new Fotokite Phi quadcopter, equipped with an action camera, was launched on the crowdfunding website Indiegogo on August 18, Tuesday. This new portable flying machine functions like a selfie stick to provide aerial photography, using a retractable leash instead of a remote controll or smartphone app, and an attachable GoPro model instead of a built-in camera.

Perspective Robotics AG developed the quadcopter. News companies such as the BBC are already using its professional version.

The four-rotor helicopter is very portable, and folds down to the approximate size of a whisky bottle. Meanwhile, its camera weighs just 350 grams (12.3 ounces).

To assemble the unit, users must fold down its arms and turn a lock on the top. Next, the GoPro camera must be attached and linked to the quadcopter's front housing. A button located on the back switches on the mini aircraft and GoPro unit.

Users must adjust the Hero3 or Hero4 camera to get overhead, front, or back shots. To launch the flying machine users must point it in the direction of the area to film, and then twist their wrist.

The Smart Leash is retractable and can extend a maximum 26 feet (8 meters), according to CNET. Its tether includes sensors and a processor, so the quadcopter can be used by pressing a button and aiming the leash.

Phi's prototypes fly up to 10 minutes based on current wind speeds, according to Pocket-Lint. Its removable USB battery can be charged while plugged into the gadget.

The Fotokite Phi's Indiegogo crowdfunding goal is $300,000. Early-bird supporters can buy one for $260 now, then pricier $350 units will be shipped out in early 2016.

It is notable that the Phi's distance and height are limited compared to similar flying cameras. However, its ease-of-use and portability are certainly key perks.
