"Room" is a 2015 Canadian-Irish drama film. It is a contemporary story about the never-ending love between mother and child.
Emma Donoghue's best-selling novel "Room," the story of an abducted mother raising her son in confinement has been adapted into a movie of the same name.
Brie Larson plays Ma, a woman who is held captive with her five-year-old son Jack, played by Jacob Tremblay, in a 10-by-10 garden shed by Old Nick played by Sean Bridgers.
Nick tricked Ma into helping him find a lost dog. She was then taken a hostage and kept in a "Room," the shack in the backyard of Nick's house. Two years later, she gave birth to Jack and gave his mother a reason to live. Seven years later, Ma and Jack find themselves still locked in "Room," longing to escape.
Jack believes the room they are being kept in is the whole world. But when she sees a chance to get away, Ma must persuade Jack to help her. Eventually, she develops the fear of having no escape and being in a closed room. Ma has apprehensions that how would her son adapt to the outside world.
Justin Chang of variety gave it a positive review. He appreciated the performances of Larson and Tremblay. Joan Allen is inevitable brilliant in the role of Jack's profoundly comforted yet emotionally devastated grandmother, while William H. Macy portrayal of grandfather is also first-rate
Todd McCarthy of Hollywood Reporter also gave "Room" an upbeat assessment appreciating the powerhouse performances by Larson and Tremblay.
The film is good, but the claustrophobic and the upsetting nature storyline will be exasperating to watch to some viewers. The running time of the film is 118 minutes. It has got a rating of 7.0/10 from 179 users and a Metascore of 76/100.
"Room" is rated R so under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian to watch.
The best-selling novel, which is narrated from Jack's standpoint, was nominated for the 2010 Man Booker Prize. The film is directed by Lenny Abrahamson and written by Donoghue.
It made its world premiere on Sept. 4 at the Telluride Film Festival. The film has also been selected to be shown in the Special Presentations section of the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival.
The film is scheduled to be released in a limited release on Oct. 16, before being released nationwide on November 6 by A24 Films.
