Thanks to the popularity of the TV drama adaptation of "Death Note," production of "Death Note 2016" movie is underway.

The news was announced at the final episode of the TV drama that had been broadcasting on Nippon TV since July alongside a teaser video.

"Death Note" was adapted in an outstanding two-part movie in 2006 entitled Death Note and Death Note: The Last Name starring Tatsuya Fujiwara, Kenichi Matsuyama, and Erika Toda. The box office hit garnered 8 billion yen.

According to Otaku Mode, The new "Death Note 2016" movie is a sequel after almost 10 years. Being a sequel, the movie will offer an entirely new plot.

Based on the unofficial synopsis, the movie is set in 2016 when an information society of the highest order exists that frequently unleashes cyberterrorism on the world. The movie features the successors of Light Yagami and L. It is unknown who inherited the wills of the two and who is in possession of a Death Note.

Spoilers revealed that the "Six-Note Rule" will be at play and has a vital role in the movie. The rule states, "Only six Death Notes can exist in the human world at the same time. Of course, this doesn't include the Death Notes owned by the Shinigami. Therefore, by way of bestowing them to humans, no more than six Shinigami can exist in the human world."

Due to the global popularity of the manga and previous films, the movie has a worldwide scope and will be filmed overseas.

"Death Note" is a hugely popular manga written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata. It was serialized by Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump. The story follows a concept of a notebook that can kill by writing names. It also explores the concept of justice viewed differently by the characters engaging them in a psychological warfare.
