Chinese artist Han Meilin has been designated as a UNESCO Artist for Peace on Tuesday by Irina Bokova, director-general of UNESCO.
Han is a renowned Chinese painter, sculptor and designer. He is most known for creating the Fuwa dolls that were used for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
According to the UNESCO press release, the international organization chose Han "in recognition of his long-term commitment to promoting art and artistic education in China, his support to providing quality education to young people."
"UNESCO wants to further cooperate with Han Meilin in the future, especially in supporting and helping promising talented artists," said Bokova.
According to Hao Ping, president of the 37th session of UNESCO's general conference, Han's designation would "contribute greatly to sustainable development and world peace." The designation coincides with the 70th anniversary of UNESCO and the end of World War II.
"Being designated as UNESCO Artist for Peace is not only an honor, but also a mission and a responsibility," Han said in his acceptance speech. He added that he would "support UNESCO's activities notably in the fields of culture and education."
Han's appointment puts him in the company of other internationally renowned personalities that have promoted UNESCO's ideals and programs using their art, influence and prestige. Such artists include the China Disabled Art Troupe, Chinese Singaporean actress Gong Li and Canadian singer Celine Dion.
The distinction of UNESCO Artist of Peace is given to international artist celebrities that have heightened public awareness of worthy causes as advocates. The distinction is given in addition to other categories given by UNESCO, including Goodwill Ambassador, Special Envoy and Champion for Sport.
