Through the combined investment of 8 million yuan ($1.29 milion) from over 500 local residents and enterprises, China's first filial piety museum was constructed and finally opened on Saturday in Qionglai City, Sichuan Province.

The museum will showcase the culture of filial piety, a depiction of dutiful sons and daughters of the ancient and modern China, through objects, pictures and videos.

Some of the heroes and heroines of filial piety stories came to witness the museum's opening.

Siblings Wang Kai and Wang Rui of northeast China built a cart for themselves to realize their mother's vision of seeing the world. They have successfully traveled over 18,000 kilometers with her all throughout 17 provinces.

In a report from the Global Times, Wang Rui said that to spread the word on making people nicer to their parents, they have invited five families to join their latest journey in April.

"We visited Shanghai, Beijing and Hainan Island. The oldest traveler is a 102-year-old grandma," Wang Rui said in the report.

A week before the museum opened, a migrant son found his parents dead in their apartment in Jiaxing City in east China's Zhejiang Province. This started an online debate in China, Qianjiang Evening News said.

It was said in the preliminary investigation that the father died in an accident ten days ago, while the mother with Alzheimer's disease suffered of dehydration and hunger less than two days ago.

China has about 62 million empty-nest elders, a number that represents one-third of the country's aging population, official statistics reported.

Wang Rui hopes that through the museum, people will be encouraged to take good care of their elder parents, the Global Times report said.
