Because of complaints from iPhone owners that a Facebook application drains more batteries because of tracking features, the largest social media site enabled an option to switch on or off the feature.
Facebook said in a press release that it does not collect background location on phones powered by iOS except if the Location Access is set to "Always" on iPhones and "Location History" in the Facebook app was enabled, reports Thenextdigit.
The tech website debunks reports that the fast use of iPhone juice was because of background application auto-refresh function. While those settings help to synchronize third-party application every second, it is not the key reason for iPhone battery problem since that feature could also be turned on or off under "Setting" option.
Because of the complaints, Facebook Engineering Manager Ari Grant blogged that the company has been looking into the causes of the problem and Facebook found a few key issues and identified additional improvements.
Even if the auto-refresh function is turned off, the Facebook application would not shut down properly. That feature actually helps save battery life, Grant adds, when the application is not in use. He explains that the application could be missing some code or has late response. Grant admits that the autoplay video feature of Facebook also causes over use of phone juice which the social media portal addressed by patching up battery issues with official apps in iOS operating system.
Grant says that the iPhones with the Facebook app are prone to experiencing CPU spin. He continues, "A CPU spin is like a child in a car asking, 'Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?' with the question not resulting in any progress to reaching the destination," quotes Mainenews.
