"Dumb and Dumber To's" idiotic duo defeated former chart-topping adorable robot in the U.S. box office chart, making an estimated gross sales of $38.1 million during its first weekend debut.

Despite merciless criticisms thrown at the farce sequel, "Dumb and Dumber To" has captured America's taste in comedy portraying idiotic people doing idiotic things to achieve idiotic goals, topping the charts at opening weekend.

In the sequel to the 1994 comedy, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels reunited to portray the dim-witted best friends Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dune who went on a farcical journey under the direction of film-making brothers Bobby and Peter Farrelly.

Although deemed by one critic as "dull and duller," the duo apparently outsmarted the American audience and captivated them with tickles to the funny bones, paving their way to the top of the chart.

Overseas, the comedy flick pursued its success after taking $106 million gross sales over the weekend following a powerful opening in China.

The low-IQ duo edged out Disney's "Big Hero 6," which garnered estimated sales of $36 million during its second week, as well as Christopher Nolan's science-fiction epic "Interstellar," which received an estimated $29.2 million.

Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for the box-office tracker Rentrak, explained that the creation of the sequel long-lead had been a huge gamble for the Farrelly brothers since most just did not work.

"Cinematic history is littered with long-lead sequels that just haven't worked. It's always a risky move to wait this long, but in this case, the casting of Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels really made a difference," he added.
