In 2011 Apple sued Samsung for patent infringement for features used on its smartphone units, such as "tap to zoom." During the next year a jury decided that Samsung should pay over $1 billion to Apple, and after a tough legal battle it has agreed to shell out about half that amount in damages to the iPhone and iPad manufacturer.
The two tech giants have released a court statement in which Samsung has agreed to pay the final figure of $548 million. However, it would happen 10 days after Apple provides an invoice.
Samsung has claimed that it can get a partial or full "refund" based on the results of court rulings in the future. Apple has argued that it does not have such a legal right.
It also seems that Samsung will request that the United States Supreme Court review the patent infringement case, according to Android Authority. If the country's highest court agrees to do that, a retrial could take place.
Apple and Samsung are the biggest players in the global smartphone market, but the court case is about more than profit margins and market share. In fact, the companies have a long history.
For example, Samsung has manufactured processors and screens for Apple's iPhones and iPads, according to CNET. Thus, the companies are both partners and rivals.
The two companies have dropped all foreign litigation. However, they have continued their legal battles in the U.S.
Their joint filing also refers to a settlement conference that happened on Nov. 2, 2015. However, it states that the meeting did not end in a settlement.
