Google has sold out of its limited-time free Star Wars Cardboard headsets, after being offered on December 11, Friday. Four virtual reality viewers were available: Kylo Ren, First Order Stormtrooper, BB-8, and R2-D2. Each VR headset was totally free, with Google even paying for the shipping.
The Cardboard viewers were available at Google Store, according to Android Central. Stars Wars fans just had to visit the online store, select a character from Episode 7 of the film series, add the special edition VR headset to their cart, and then go to checkout.
However, the Cardboard VR viewers were only available in the United States. The search giant did not announce the number of units available, although it is possible thousands were given out.
Google's "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" promo product was added to Google Store about a week before the North America premiere on December 18, Friday. The site showed immediate shipping dates, revealing that they would be delivered before the film hit theaters.
This new giveaway is a shrewd marketing strategy for the tech titan and film franchise. That is because Google has asked visitors to its online store to sign up for email reminders about future promos, according to The Verge.
Google Cardboard has become an affordable way to introduce its owners to the VR experience. In addition, it functions on a smartphone.
"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is one of the year's most anticipated movies. It is directed by J.J. Abrams and is set about 30 years after "Return of the Jedi" (1983).
