Twitter Mac app receives a much-needed update a fresh new look and a whole lot more.

A former twitter employee Jonathan Wight said that the development of the Mac app was outsourced to a third-party developer, according to The Verge. The said developer is Black Pixel, a well-regarded digital studio based in Seattle. Black Pixel's other clients have included ESPN, Starbucks, and The New York Times.

Support for features includes such as inline video and animated GIFs, and the app no longer clashes with the design aesthetic of Mac OS X Yosemite and El Capitan. There is also support for a Notification Center widget, something previous versions lacked.

Users can choose for either the default Twitter color scheme or a new “dark mode,” which matches well with the dark theme first introduced in Yosemite. Other changes include group messaging support, the ability to mute specific accounts, and compatibility with Twitter’s new quote style for retweets.

It also features group Direct Messages with up to 50 people, quoting tweets that adds two cents on any Retweet, the latest improvements to icons, buttons, and interactions.

However, there are still some issues need to be address. It includes laggy scrolling, repeating old notifications, and login issues. In addition, some features are not present in the updated version such as full-screen mode or Split View support as well as presenting Twitter polls, 9to5Mac reported. But it is a step in the right direction for what previously felt like an abandoned Mac app.

Twitter has emphasised that desktop is not its priority, as more and more users access the service via mobile. Users can get the new Twitter for Mac for free on the Mac App Store.
