Last year's "Warcraft" film did not do well with critics but it did manage to earn over $433 million worldwide and is the most successful adaptation of a video game thus far. Profitable movies often lead to sequels but director Duncan Jones now reveals he is still waiting for an update.
"I'd love it to happen," Jones responded to a fan on Twitter. "Waiting to hear from Legendary."
"Warcraft" did not perform well domestically but earned over $200 million throughout its run in China. Its total worldwide box office also made it more successful than Disney's live-action film adaptation of "Prince of Persia," which starred Jake Gyllenhaal, IGN reported.
However, the movie cost $160 million and this excludes the costs of marketing the film. Legendary has yet to announce whether or not the movie made any profit and it is expected that the film may have even lost the studio some money.
In comparison, the live-action "Resident Evil" movies have earned the studios over $1 billion combined. There is also an upcoming "Tomb Raider" movie reboot which will now star Alicia Vikander in the titular role.
That being said, no video game movie in history has yet received critical praise. Even "Assassin's Creed," with its Academy Award cast and director, failed to impress audiences and critics.
Jones also explained back when the film released that he had ideas for a sequel and that they could expand the franchise into a trilogy, Gamespot reported. However, this all depends on whether or not Legendary will want to move forward with a sequel.
The first movie was primarily based on the events of the first "Warcraft" video game. This means there is still a lot of potential plot arcs that could be adapted, particularly from "Warcraft III" and its expansion, "Warcraft: Frozen Throne."
Legendary has not yet responded regarding the possibility of a sequel. The trailer to the "Warcraft" movie can be viewed below:
