Lil Wayne is the stage name for the famous rapper, Dwayne Michael Carter, Jr.

Grammy-winning rapper Lil Wayne's tour buses were shot by a gang member to establish street credibility with his gang. Jimmy Carlton Winfrey, 25, faces several charges, including aggravated assault, the police said on Friday.

Winfrey shot two tour buses of Lil Wayne who had a show at a nightclub in Atlanta on April 26. Cobb County Police released Winfrey's arrest warrant last week, saying his motive was to establish street credibility with his gang, identified as Bloods gang.

Police said the gangster is associated with known members of the gang in Atlanta and the plot was to shoot at a high-profile "rival rap artist" to get a higher status in his criminal organization, Reuters reported.

Although no one was hurt, Winfrey faces a number of felony counts, including criminal damage to property, felony possession of a firearm, criminal gang activity and terroristic threats, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution cited in its report on May 28, Thursday.

The Cobb County Police did not confirm if Winfrey was arrested or taken into custody. Apart from the details released, the arrest warrant will not be publicized, spokeswoman Alicia Chilton said.

The shooting resulted to US$20,000 worth of damage to the buses, where a dozen crew and music executives were on board. It took place at 3:30 a.m. in Atlanta's Cobb County after Wayne's show, the police said.

Wayne, whose real name is Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., won Grammys for best rap album, best rap solo performance, and best rap song in 2008. His latest rap mixtape "Sorry 4 The Wait 2" was released this January.
